How to play 7-letter Word Guess

Type a real seven-letter word and press Enter. Green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is somewhere else in the word, and gray means it is not there. You have six guesses to find one of 1,099 common seven-letter answers. Almost 19,400 guesses are accepted.

Why seven letters is the expert level

You only get six guesses for seven letters, so you can't test every letter one by one. The good news: seven-letter words follow strong patterns. Learn the patterns and the game becomes much easier.

Letter facts from our answer list

  • E is in 64% of answers and I in 53%, much higher than in shorter words. R (50%), A (48%), N (46%) and T (42%) follow.
  • The ending -NG appears in 171 answers (16%), almost always as -ING. G is the second most common last letter.
  • Other common endings are -ED (96 answers), -ER (80), -AL and -LY.
  • Two answers in three (66%) repeat a letter. Doubles are normal at this length.
  • Half of all answers (50%) have three vowels.

Best first guesses

Our top-ranked openers are TEARING, GRANITE, SEATING, CERTAIN, ROUTINE and TRAINED. TEARING and SEATING test the -ING ending straight away. GRANITE and CERTAIN test the same strong letters without assuming -ING.

Tips for seven letters

  • Try -ING early. If I, N and G are all yellow or green, the answer very likely ends in -ING.
  • Use your second guess on fresh letters. After TEARING, try UPHOLDS or SLOUCHY. Each tests six or seven letters you haven't tried yet, including the vowels O and U.
  • Place before you guess. Write the letters you know in their possible positions. With seven slots, a few minutes of thinking saves guesses.
