How to play Klondike solitaire
The goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundations, one pile per suit, in order from Ace up to King.
- Tableau: seven columns. Only the top card of each column starts face up. You can stack cards in descending order with alternating colors (a red 6 on a black 7). You can move a whole face-up run at once.
- Empty columns can only be filled with a King (or a run that starts with a King).
- Stock and waste: tap the stock to turn over cards. In Draw 1 you turn one card at a time. In Draw 3 you turn three, and only the top one can be played. When the stock runs out, tap it to recycle the waste.
Tap a card to send it to the best legal spot automatically, or drag it where you want. Undo as often as you like. When the stock is used up and every card is face up, Auto finish plays the rest for you.
Strategy that wins more games
- Uncover hidden cards first. Your top priority is turning over face-down cards in the tableau. Prefer moves from the column with the most hidden cards.
- Don't rush to the foundations. Aces and 2s should go up right away. Higher cards are sometimes more useful in the tableau, where they can hold lower cards of the other color.
- Empty a column only when you have a King ready. An empty column without a King to put there wastes a move.
- Choose your King wisely. If both a red and a black Queen are waiting, pick the King whose color lets the right Queen follow.
- Use the stock last. Make every tableau move you can before turning the stock, especially in Draw 3, where turning changes which cards you can reach.
Draw 1 or Draw 3?
Draw 1 is more relaxed and you will win most games if you play carefully. Draw 3 is the traditional, harder version: fewer games can be won, and planning ahead matters much more. Each mode has its own daily deal.
Can every game be won?
No. Some Klondike deals have no solution, however well you play. Computer studies show that most deals could be won by a player who knew where every card was, but real players, who can only see the face-up cards, win fewer. If a game feels stuck, try Undo and a different line, or start a new deal.
Klondike is named after the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s and became world famous when it shipped with Windows in 1990.

Yes. Press Undo as many times as you like.
What can go in an empty column?
Only a King, or a run of cards that starts with a King.
Is there a daily deal?
Yes. There is a daily deal for Draw 1 and another for Draw 3, the same for every player.
