How to play 4-letter Word Guess
Type a real four-letter word and press Enter. Green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the word. You have six tries. The answer is always one of 797 common four-letter words, and you can guess from more than 10,000.
Why four letters is trickier than it looks
With fewer letters, each guess tells you less, and many short words differ by only one letter. Think of bake, cake, fake, lake, make, rake, sake, take, wake. That is why 4-letter games often come down to a lucky last guess unless you plan for these "word families".
Letter facts from our answer list
- E is in 42% of answers, A in 35%, O in 29%, L in 25% and T in 24%.
- Almost every answer has one or two vowels (791 of 797). Only 2 answers have no vowel at all.
- S is the most common first letter (11%), and E the most common last letter (20%).
- The most common endings are -LL (28 answers, like bell and pull), -ST, -RE and -CK.
- 18% of answers repeat a letter, for example book, noon or tell.
Best first guesses
Based on letter frequency in the answer list, the strongest openers are TALE, SALE, LANE, LATE and RATE. After TALE, a second guess of IRON, HORN or CORN tests four new common letters, including the vowels I and O.
Beating word families
Say you reach _ACK with three guesses left. The answer could be back, hack, jack, lack, pack, rack, sack or tack. Guessing them one by one could take eight tries. Instead, spend one guess on a word that tests several of those first letters at once, such as SLAP (S, L and P) or BATH (B, T and H). Whichever letter turns yellow tells you the answer. One "wasted" guess can save you two or three.
