How to play 6-letter Word Guess
Enter any real six-letter word and press Enter. Green tiles are right letters in the right spot, yellow tiles are in the word but in another spot, and gray letters are not in the word. You get six tries to find one of 1,098 everyday six-letter answers, and the game accepts almost 19,000 different guesses.
What makes six letters different
Longer words give you more information per guess, so the first two guesses usually reveal three or four letters. The hard part is placing them. Six-letter words are often built from a short root plus an ending, and that is the key to solving them fast.
Letter facts from our answer list
- E is in 68% of answers. R is in 47%, A in 41%, T in 37% and I in 36%.
- Half of all answers (50%) repeat at least one letter, like letter, common or coffee. Expect doubles.
- The most common endings are -ER (127 answers), -ED (85), -NG (56), -LY (50) and -LE (49). When the last two tiles go green, you are often halfway there.
- 64% of answers have exactly two vowels and 29% have three.
Best first guesses
Ranked by how often their letters appear in the answer list: RETAIN, RETAIL, RENTAL, LINEAR, SERIAL and MARINE. RETAIN tests the six most useful letters except O. A strong second guess with six new letters is SHOULD or SYMBOL.
Three tips for six letters
- Test the ending early. If E and R are yellow, try them at the end as -ER. It is the single most common pattern.
- Check for doubles. If you have five letters placed and nothing fits, one of your letters probably appears twice.
- Think in roots. PLAY + ER, TRAVEL, SIMPLE, GARDEN: spotting the root makes the rest fall into place.
